Across the country, electric dryers account for 80% of dryers sold. However, here at Mrs. G's we sell as many electric models as we do gas. When selecting a dryer, Mrs G's recommends that you consider a gas dryer. While both gas and electric dryers' performances are very similar, gas dryers tend to cost about $50 more than electric. But when you factor in the savings in fuel cost over the life span of the dryer, which can be up to 50% in laundry related energy costs, the savings totally outweigh the initial cost. Over drying can damage or shrink fabrics, so look for dryers with a moisture sensor. Using the moisture sensor, which automatically shuts off the dryer when it senses the clothes are dry, will save energy. Energy star does not label clothes dryers because most dryers use the same amount of energy. Therefore, if you are looking for energy efficiency choose a dryer with a moisture sensor. Dryers come in various sizes, and the size difference of the drums can affect drying time. Dryers that have large drums, 7.0 or larger cubic feet, have extra tumbling room and airflow which produce fewer wrinkles, and faster drying times. Some models have a reverse tumbling movement to help untangle clothes and speed up the drying time. Dryers have the potential to be noisy. If your dryer is located near a bedroom or living area choose a quieter dryer. Bosch, 64 dB, and LG, 58 dB, are one of the few manufacturers that rate their quietness by decibels.
